National Library Week

It's National Library Week!  Can you think of a better time to visit your local Olathe library?  This year's theme is "Unlimited Possibilities @ Your Library."  Read a book.  Watch a movie.  Play a video game.  Listen to an audiobook.  Use a computer. Check out some music.  Download an ebook.  Look at some magazines.  Attend a storytime.  The library makes all these things—and more—possible.  And it's all for free!  You can't beat that.

Along with our regularly scheduled storytimes, the library also has some special programs going on this week for kids, including on Friday when schools are out.

LEGO Design Contest

The Olathe Public Library's 5th Annual LEGO Design Contest is quickly approaching!  If you haven't yet registered, we still have a few spots left,  But don't delay!  You build your own original design at home with your own bricks and bring it to the contest.

The contest will be on Saturday, April 11 at the Indian Creek Community Church (12480 S. Black Bob Rd.).  The contest is held off-site so we have more space for more contestants.  There are categories for kids in K - 5th grade and for teens in 6th - 12th grades, and this year for the first time, we also have a category for adults.  You can download all the rules and the full schedule HERE.  You may register online through our Events page; call the library at (913) 971-6874; or register in person at either Olathe library.  And even if you don't enter the contest, it's always fun to come and see what these creative LEGO enthusiasts come up with.  Everyone is welcome.

Read to a Dog on March 7

If you've been waiting to Read to a Dog, come to the Olathe Indian Creek Library this Saturday, March 7 between 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.  We've had some difficulties in recent months arranging for volunteers and their dogs to come to our Read to a Dog programs, but this Saturday we are good to go!  Yea!  We have two dogs lined up to come listen to some good books.  Check in at the Children's Services Desk when you arrive.  Our trained therapy dogs are provided by Pets for Life, Inc.  Be sure to let them know how much you appreciate this program!

Read to a Dog - CANCELLED

Read to a Dog on February 21 at Olathe Downtown Library has been cancelled.  Pets for Life, Inc., the organization that provides our trained therapy dogs, has been having difficulty supplying us with volunteers.  They are working to resolve this issue.  In the meantime, we recommend calling the library before coming to any Read to a Dog programs this spring to confirm that we actually have dogs. We apologize for any incovenience.

Olathe School District Art Display 2015

It's that time of year when the Children's Department at the Olathe Downtown Library is adorned with artwork created by elementary students from the Olathe School District.  There are paintings, drawings, collages, sculptures, ceramics, and more.  The art display is scheduled to be up February 17 - March 26.  Next time you are at the library, take some time to enjoy the work of these creative young artists.  Let's support the arts in our schools!
