Today is the 100th birthday of one of our favorite children's authors—Roald Dahl! Roald Dahl is the author of such children's classics as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, and The BFG, just to name a few. Dahl was born on September 13, 1916 in Llandaff, Wales and died on November 23, 1990 in Oxford, England. Today would have been his 100th birthday, and his books are as popular as ever. Why not celebrate by reading one of his wonderful books or watching one of the many movies inspired by his books? Roald Dahl is truly one of children's literature's most beloved authors, and we celebrate his life and work.

We are excited to once again be able to offer services on the east side of Olathe while the old HyVee building at Santa Fe & Brougham is being renovated as the new permanent location for the Indian Creek Library. This could take a couple of years, but in the meantime we're pleased to serve you at the new temporary location. And as always, the Downtown Library will continue to serve patrons as usual. We have appreciated your patience and support during this time of transition. If you have any questions, give us a call at (913) 971-6874.
On your mark, get set, LEGO! It was a rip-roarin' good time at this summer's LEGO Lock-In at the Downtown Library. Kids and parents had lots of fun building all kinds of vehicles out of LEGO bricks and then testing them out for speed and durability on our race ramps. I think we might have some future automotive engineers among us!
Click the pics below for a closer look at the fun. And many of the vehicles are currently on display in the Children's Department at the Downtown Library. But hurry, they won't be around for long!
The Children's Department has started giving out free paperback books when kids return their summer reading logs. The book giveaway will continue through Friday, August 19. Just bring your summer reading log into the library, show us what you read this summer, and pick out your free book! If you attend an Olathe District school, we will also notify your school that you participated in our summer reading program. So don't delay! Bring back your reading log by August 19 and get your free book. We hope you read some great books this summer!
It was an afternoon of "Life-Size Games" for 4th & 5th graders at today's library program at Indian Creek Elementary School. Kids played extra large versions of such favorites as Jenga, Chutes and Ladders, and Angry Birds. It looks like everyone had a lot of fun! Click the pics below for a closer look.
Yoga instructor Jessica Sexton led children in some basic yoga practice on Thursday afternoon at the Downtown Library. Children learned sun salutation, down dog, tree pose, bridge, and other yoga poses. By the end everyone was stretched and calm and ready to relax. Thanks, Miss Jessica, for a great summer program! And if you'd like to learn more about yoga, check out a book or dvd next time you are at the library.
